Honda CR-Z

Making its North American debut, the CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car concept equipped with Honda's original gas-electric hybrid system that achieves both clean performance and a high level of torque. The CR-Z stands for "Compact Renaissance Zero" - an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins anew from fundamentals. The design research model of a lightweight hybrid sports car features advanced technologies that deliver elevated driving performance while reducing the vehicle's environmental footprint.

Designed to be futuristic and dynamic, the CR-Z combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high-performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps create a powerful presence.

Design details emphasizing the CR-Z's advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights that convey a sharp impression, and jaunty fin-shaped sub-lights. Large 19-inch wheels suggest dynamic driving performance.

The key words for the CR-Z's interior design are "Hi-tech and Sporty." The goal was to create an all-new sporty interior that fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of driving. Mesh material on a simple framework construction is used throughout the interior to convey a light, sophisticated image. In the cockpit, the meter unit conveys the image of advanced technology ensconced in a piece of glass artwork, offering quick recognition and a futuristic and exhilarating appearance.

The CR-Z concept vehicle made its world debut at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show in November and indicates the styling direction for a second, new hybrid vehicle to be introduced by Honda Motor Co., Ltd. The other future hybrid vehicle, designed to meet the needs of a family and priced below the Civic Hybrid, is planned for introduction in 2009.

Mazda 5

The Mazda 5 remains the most compelling of the two vehicles in the wagon/minivan missing-link market—the other being the Kia Rondo—with a two-plus-two-plus-two seating arrangement in a vehicle barely longer than a Jetta. The Mazda 5 rides on an elongated Mazda 3 chassis, with which it shares its sprightly moves. Rear sliding doors bless both sides, making it that much harder for a speeding taxi to remove an open door, and you with it. Although it is the longest vehicle on this list, it is still shorter than the average passenger car and takes full advantage of a high ceiling to offer oodles of usable space for less money than a Mini.

New Mazda2 Three-Door Hatchback

For the first time ever, a Mazda2 three-door hatchback joins the popular Mazda2 model range. Bringing with it all the attributes of the five-door hatchback, the three-door model is even sportier and more affordable. Mazda will showcase the world premiere of this new vehicle at the 78th annual Geneva International Motor Show to be held from Tuesday, March 4, through Sunday, March 16, 2008.

The new Mazda2 three-door hatchback is designed to attract new customers to further Mazda’s continued growth in the European market. It comes with the same lively and responsive MZR 1.3-liter and 1.5- liter gasoline, powertrains, and the same MZ-CD 1.4-liter common-rail turbo diesel, as the five-door hatchback. These engines achieve high fuel efficiency along with particularly low CO2 emissions.

Launched in September 2007 as Mazda’s first new-generation Zoom-Zoom vehicle to evolve to the next level, the new Mazda2 was an immediate hit with European customers. In December 2007, it was awarded five stars for adult occupant protection on Euro-NCAP crash testing and has won more than 20 automotive awards. These include Car of the Year awards in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Greece and New Zealand, along with the Japan RJC Car of the Year.

By completely redesigning the body and chassis and implementing Mazda’s unique gram strategy, the Mazda2 is nearly 100 kilograms lighter compared to the previous version, with a vehicle weight under the 1,000 kilogram threshold. This outstanding result resists the trend to heavier and bigger cars.

Also at Geneva this year are three European debuts: the Mazda Taiki concept car, equipped with Mazda’s next-generation rotary engine, the Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid and the facelift version of Mazda’s unique rotary engine sports car, the RX-8.

Officially called the Salon International de l’Auto de Genève, the Geneva show’s press days are on March 4 and 5, and the public days are March 6 through16, 2008.
